12th March 2014. Huge thanks to generous shoppers at Sainsbury’s in Calne this weekend for donating over £600 to WILSAR. We rely on public donations such as this to keep the team running effectively and at a high state of readiness.

Our volunteers enjoy engaging with the public and happily give up their time to make fundraising events possible as well as being available for training and live callouts, so big thanks to them too.

We Don’t Just Search for Missing People

6 January 2014  |  News  |  , ,

Monday, 6th January 2014. We don’t just search for missing people.

Following a recent urgent request for help from a local Flood Warden in Wilton, Salisbury, team members spent the afternoon filling sand bags to protect The High Street and properties in Crow Lane, which were at immediate risk from flooding.

Wilton’s stream, normally only six inches deep, was flowing steadily at five feet deep and just inches from breaching its banks. WILSAR volunteers proceeded to use their control vehicle to help distribute the bags along the stream, gratefully assisted by local residents.

A very hard but rewarding day’s work for all involved. More sand was ordered and WILSAR remained on standby to assist further.

WILSAR Receives Police Chief Constable’s Award

30 October 2013  |  News  |  ,

Wednesday 30th October 2013.

Proud volunteers and their families from Wiltshire Search and Rescue (WILSAR) gathered in Devizes on Wednesday to receive Wiltshire Police Chief Constable’s Certificate of Appreciation. The Chief Constable attended the event in person to present the award to Gail Leaman, the Chair of WILSAR.

Mr Geenty said: “WILSAR have turned out on hundreds of occasions to help search for missing people. They have assisted on 36 occasions already during 2013 resulting in 20 missing people being found safe and well. Their consistent delivery of skilled searching has led to a level of trust from our own Police Search Advisers (PolSAs) in the quality of work WILSAR do, to the extent that they operate independently on many occasions.

“The level of enthusiasm and commitment shown by members of WILSAR is outstanding and this commitment is illustrated by the fact that five of team’s members are being recognised for having delivered five years of service and a further seven for undertaking more than ten years. It is with great pleasure that I am able to recognise WILSAR’s ongoing commitment to the people of Wiltshire and express our gratitude with this award.”

WILSAR PR officer, Sly Jenkins, commented: “Our volunteers are on call to assist the Police 24/7, 365 days a year, whatever the weather. We pay for all our own equipment and fuel, and expect nothing in return so we’re thrilled to be recognised like this, it’s a huge boost for the team.”

WILSAR have been operating for over 13 years and in 2011 received The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

Seend Haircut Raises Funds

6 September 2013  |  News  |  ,

Friday 6th September 2013. Wiltshire Search and Rescue received some ‘fringe’ benefits on Friday evening when Seend’s Paul Waylen chose us as his selected charity. Paul, who cannot remember his last haircut, had his famous golden locks cut off for charity (and to look ten years younger!) Customers at Seend Community Centre and The Brewery Inn donated over £150 for Paul’s sacrifice. WILSAR thanks the Seend community for their continued support.

Seend Fundraising and Tug of War Success

10 August 2013  |  News  |  ,

On Saturday 10th August, 13 members volunteered to control car parking at the annual Seend Village Fete and to display our control van. WILSAR has been seen in and around Seend, both training and working, so this was a great opportunity to show the community who we are and what we do.

What we didn’t expect though was being ‘dragged’ (or roped!) into competing in the Tug of War. We saw off the team from The Brewery Inn to finish runners up to the Seend Community Centre team. If only we’d had our boots on!? It was a successful day at the end of which we’d raised £160 and a trophy (which we had to give back!)
