Saturday 3rd August 2013. Wiltshire Search and Rescue (WILSAR) would like to say a big thank you to Sainsbury’s in Calne for the use of their store frontage to hold Saturday’s fundraising bucket collection. A big thank you also goes to Calne shoppers, residents and visitors alike, who kindly and very generously donated £438 towards our fundraising.

Halfords Sat Nav Support

Friday 5th July 2013. WILSAR would like to thank Halfords store in Trowbridge for giving us a generous discount off the cost of a replacement sat nav unit for our control van. Vehicles Officer Andy Peaple said “We receive around 50 calls per year for which our control vehicle travels approximately 2,500 miles. We are grateful to Halfords for their support.”

16th June 2013. Following a successful but very wet Saturday at the UKLSI training weekend at Oxenwood, I would like to welcome two new members to the team Judith Loughran and Gordon Black who completed the Search Technician Techniques and Skills course.  Congratulations to Janice Rumming and John Needham who completed the Team Leader Skills course.  Both courses are in line with ALSAR competencies.

Royal Air Force donates to WILSAR

12th June 2013. Royal Air Force Brize Norton’s Charities Committee have kindly awarded £400 to WILSAR. The committee were impressed to learn of WILSAR’s commitment to the community, in particular our recent training in Water Search and Flood Response. They agreed to fund the cost of eight specialist Scorpion helmets with mounted Minilux torches to help the team develop in this area.

Operation Isis

23rd March 2013. Fifteen members and WILSAR’s control vehicle recently took part in Operation Isis, as lowland search and rescue teams from around the country gathered in Oxfordshire for a simulated major incident exercise. Operation Isis, the first-ever multi-unit national lowland search and rescue exercise, brought together specialist search and rescue teams from the Association of Lowland Search and Rescue (ALSAR), the emergency services and associated partners to demonstrate and showcase their abilities and skills in a simulated search exercise.

17th February 2013. Welcome and congratulations to Michael Freeguard and Rebecca Freeman on passing their Lowland Search Technician assessments.

Congratulations also to Jon Watson for passing his Lowland Search Team Leader assessment. After attending regular training sessions and a weekend Team Leader training course, Jon is now qualified to lead search teams during operational callouts.

Alzheimer’s Support visit WILSAR

13th February 2013. WILSAR members welcomed Alzheimer’s Support Care Co-ordinator Anna Spear at a recent training evening. Anna explained various types of dementia, described symptoms of the disease and provided advice how to approach and talk with people with dementia. WILSAR is often tasked to search for missing persons with dementia and we thank Anna for visiting us.

Alzheimer’s Support is an independent charity providing practical services to people living at home with dementia and to their family carers in East and West Wiltshire. Further information available at
