Samaritans Charity Visit WILSAR Training Evening

2 April 2014  |  News  |  , ,

2nd April 2014. Our recent training evening hosted a visit by speakers from the Samaritans charity. Our guests explained that people can talk with the Samaritans any time they like, in their own way, and off the record about whatever is getting to them. We found out more about the organisation and discussed what a despondent person might be going through and how best to approach and support them. WILSAR is often tasked to search for despondent missing persons and we thank the Samaritans for providing a very interesting and valuable training evening.

Samaritans is a registered charity supporting anyone in distress, around the clock, through 200 branches across the UK and Republic of Ireland. They are actively involved in local communities, reaching out and working with schools, colleges and universities, workplaces, health and welfare services, homeless shelters, prisons and other charities, and promoting awareness of their service at local social venues, community events and music festivals. WILSAR Receives Police Chief Constable’s Award

30 October 2013  |  News  |  ,

Wednesday 30th October 2013.

Proud volunteers and their families from Wiltshire Search and Rescue (WILSAR) gathered in Devizes on Wednesday to receive Wiltshire Police Chief Constable’s Certificate of Appreciation. The Chief Constable attended the event in person to present the award to Gail Leaman, the Chair of WILSAR.

Mr Geenty said: “WILSAR have turned out on hundreds of occasions to help search for missing people. They have assisted on 36 occasions already during 2013 resulting in 20 missing people being found safe and well. Their consistent delivery of skilled searching has led to a level of trust from our own Police Search Advisers (PolSAs) in the quality of work WILSAR do, to the extent that they operate independently on many occasions.

“The level of enthusiasm and commitment shown by members of WILSAR is outstanding and this commitment is illustrated by the fact that five of team’s members are being recognised for having delivered five years of service and a further seven for undertaking more than ten years. It is with great pleasure that I am able to recognise WILSAR’s ongoing commitment to the people of Wiltshire and express our gratitude with this award.”

WILSAR PR officer, Sly Jenkins, commented: “Our volunteers are on call to assist the Police 24/7, 365 days a year, whatever the weather. We pay for all our own equipment and fuel, and expect nothing in return so we’re thrilled to be recognised like this, it’s a huge boost for the team.”

WILSAR have been operating for over 13 years and in 2011 received The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.
