Volunteers’ Week 1st – 7th June 2015

A week in the life of WILSAR’s volunteers…

Wednesday – Team training, fitness check, 5 Mile walk in under 2 hours.

Searchers need to be fit enough to cope with the physical and mental pressure placed upon them during live searches.

Thursday – Callout in Wroughton, MisPer found by Police prior to Team deployment.

This happens often but the Team treat every search as an emergency so kit will have been prepared and boots will have been donned!

Friday to Sunday – Several members passing on their skills, teaching at UKLSI in Worcestershire.

Many of our volunteers have years’ worth of experience and are only too happy to pass it on by teaching within the Team or through the United Kingdom Lowland Search Institute. This weekend’s courses included Lowland Search Technician, Lowland Team Leader and Tracking.

Saturday – Double booked! 5 volunteers displaying our control van and equipment at the Amesbury Show and 5 volunteers fundraising outside Sainsbury’s in Calne.

Community events are a brilliant way to engage with the public and get our name known and ‘Tin Rattles’ as we call them are an essential part of funding the Team’s running costs. Thanks to Amesbury’s junior paddlers who donated £20 as a thankyou for playing in our kayaks. Thanks also to generous shoppers in Calne who donated nearly £400 to WILSAR after talking to our volunteers outside Sainsbury’s.

Although it was National Volunteers’ Week, this wasn’t an unusual one for us. Training, fundraising, community events are all just as much a part of being a WILSAR volunteer as the callouts and searching. We couldn’t do one without the other so please like, share and follow us and if you’d like to thank us for the good work we do then an on-line donation is always very welcome!
